an open source b(v)oxel engine - a community project?

Post by jph_wacheski »

[ not sure where to post this one, Ville please move it to where you think it fits best. ]

Found this recently; https://sites.google.com/site/letsmakeavoxelengine/

I have just started reading, but got me thinking again about a ZGE community project, to get some sort of basic game setup built as an open project people can expand on to make their own games.

Since b(v)oxels are rather popular currently, and seems like something that would attract more people to zge, perhaps we could work on implementing a basic b(v)oxel game engine in zge.

Anyone interested?

Hi Jph,

I had similar idea of publishing a ZGE "technology" used in Toyland Shooter to be used for games or simulations. Basically, it is about building a physic-aware scenes loaded from textual files with special syntax, where player can move freely and interact with other objects and dynamic (programmed) entities such as enemies or other avatars. I interrupted its development because Android support has occurred in meantime and I also started some other projects. If you are interested in the current status of Toyland Shooter, I can publish its current state.

Anyway, I would be happy to join a team trying to implement a (simple) voxel game engine in ZGE, if you think I could be helpful. I could maybe help with physics, creating and using external libraries, parsing level-configuration files, creating procedural textures and meshes, creating a generic framework for configuring scenes or object dynamics (such as in Toyland Shooter or BallZ), etc.

Hi guys,

Even though I am not interested personally ( would rather work on a game instead of a template / framework, and not really a boxel-fan either ), I do think community projects are a good idea ... as long as someone is willing to pull the bandwagon and keep followers informed in order to make contributions as easy as possible, I'm sure people will end up helping out
