CrackArt - free open source 3D modeling and texturing app!

Post by jph_wacheski »

wow, this looks interesting,.

http://crackart.org

especially the texture painting (promised, not working yet :( ) and the current baking textures! that would be cool for simple 3d levels to get shadow light maps like qrad or the like,. . or to get Ambient Occlusion or other interesting procedural maps,. .

there is also a Catmull-Clark Subdivision Surfaces ObjectModifier like i would like to see added to ZGE,. .

and.. the spline tools with the Surfacer,. a Topology Modifier that generates mesh surfaces from splines. Sweet!

well that is a cool tool and it has c++ source to mess with,. . although after trying it,. it is a tad unstable,. ;( . sortat like that TopMod but I been using that too,. .

Said it before, will say it again.

Softimage Mod Tool ( free for non-commercial use ).

After using 3ds Max for 6 years ( 3 years commercial ), and Maya for 3 years ( commercial ) .. I can safely say that Softimage tops them all.

yeah that is an interesting tool however it is far from free or open,.

<open anti corpo-fascist rant, not really aimed at you Kj just on my head currently!>

I am avoiding as much corporate crap as i can,. (yes I still run windows, but I would prefer a free/open OS and if ever I find the time, will get to that as well) I would rather hack away in obscurity, than support the giant death machine,. It is the corporate mentality and philosophy that is the biggest problem facing us today,. world wide banking (slavery) system of control and the military/police death machine if is attached to,. do you know about the Monsanto Terminator Seeds? [ http://www.etcgroup.org/en/issues/termi ... aitor.html ] or the private corporations taking control of localfresh water supplies,. [ http://www.cbc.ca/news/features/water/ ] the list of these insaine greedy operations is long! I just dont' want to involve myself with that crazy ass greedy system and the corpo-crap it produces.

<close rant>

free/or small-scale independant, and opensource, is what I am after,. things I want to support the creation and use of.. ,

O agree with JPH for only one reason:
free for non-commercial use :D

JPH already tried (and sold!) some copies of his games ^^
In the fall of 1972 President Nixon announced that the rate of increase of inflation was decreasing. This was the first time a sitting president used the third derivative to advance his case for reelection.

Softimage is either or. The free version isn't open, the non-free version comes with a C++ based SDK which gives you pretty low level access.

Actually, there's also "Softimage Mod Tool Pro" which is free for commercial use .. but only for Xbox Live Community Games at the moment ( which in itself costs $99 a year to develop for ).

But I know allot of people are sensitive about the conglomerate issue. Softimage was initially a small independent studio from Montreal, but got bought up ( as often happens with great software ). For me personally that isn't a reason to stop using something ... guess everybody's different :)
