Will here is a strange thing, I was having my morning coffee and the idea of a modular sound synth entered my mind,. I did a couple quick searches around the net and found this one;

very nice little modular synth i.e. you hook together the building blocks of sound synthesis and create your own synth patch that generates your sounds,. the extra cool thing is that it is FREE if you use the BUZZ version! (my preference anyhow )
[ also in the forum for the above I came across another synth system that is crazy advanced (multi touch interface, and video trackeing, gui building, etc., etc.) and very cool. It is some what free ( limited ver. is ) ,. although I have not had time to test this one just yet; http://www.sensomusic.com ]

circle is cool,.
Circle is cool,. nice looking, and interesting routing setup however I think wires are a bit quicker to see than color coded dots that you have to match up,. also it is a tad expensive,. I can still play with it for 20 min. and then it goes out of tune, haha,. neet criple!
Usine seems to be a bit more programable/customizable with the gui interface building for live use etc. Ableton seems more prebuilt instraments (and masses of samples) with a mixer,. but I have not had time to mess with either,. also Ableton is VERY expensive. (well for me anyway, as I am still quite poor, cash wise, rich in soul!)
Here is a little tune I made using just buzz to host BLOK i.e. no other buzz synths or effects;
block tune one (mp3 622kb)
Anyway there sure are a load of software based music / sound design tools kicking around these days,. found this site too; http://rekkerd.org/
good times.
